The AuthorWing Beta Reader Academy

Nonfiction authors need readers who can tell them what’s working, what’s confusing and what’s missing before their book goes out into the world. We’re building a short training programme to help you become that reader, and a path to get paid for it.

What is a beta reader?

A beta reader reads a book before it’s published and gives the author honest, structured feedback. Not proofreading, and not a review.

It’s the reader’s view: where you got hooked, where you drifted, which explanations clicked and which didn’t. For nonfiction, good beta readers are gold, because they catch the gaps an author is too close to see.

A note from Jenny

I’ve been writing and publishing nonfiction since 2012, and some of the most useful feedback I’ve ever had came from ordinary readers who simply told me the truth. That’s what AuthorWing is about: real readers helping real authors make better books. The Academy is our way of turning that honesty into a skill, and then into paid work. I’d love you to be part of it from the start.

Questions

When does the Academy open?

We’re building it now. Everyone who registers will hear first, before we open applications publicly.

Does it cost anything?

We’ll share full details, including any costs, before applications open. Registering your interest is free and commits you to nothing.

How much do Trusted Beta Readers earn?

Trusted Beta Readers will be paid for every beta read. We’ll publish rates before applications open.

How long does a beta read take?

It depends on the book, but most take a couple of weeks of relaxed reading plus time to write up your feedback. You’ll always see the length and deadline before you accept.

Do I need experience?

No. The Academy is designed for keen readers. If you already have experience, you can apply for the Professional Beta Reader route instead.
