Between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas lies a Southern Italy of fishing villages, medieval hill towns, remarkable food and roads that reward the curious traveller.

Experience Calabria Slowly is a richly photographed travel guide built from Aaron and Mary’s own journeys through the region. Part practical guide, part personal road trip and part photographic love letter, it explores the Calabria that many visitors never take the time to discover.

Follow the journey through Pizzo, Tropea and Scilla, then into the historic towns of San Giorgio Morgeto, Mammola and Gerace, before reaching the Ionian coast at Roccella Ionica.

Inside you’ll discover:

Coastal towns, beaches, historic streets and worthwhile detours
Restaurants, local dishes, markets, festivals and places to stay
Original photography, scenic viewpoints and dedicated photo walks
Traditional Calabrian recipes alongside the author’s own variations
Practical driving, sightseeing and travel advice drawn from personal experience
History, local culture, regional wines and the food traditions that give Calabria its character
Mary’s candid observations, favourite discoveries and advice from the passenger seat

This is not a race through Southern Italy or a checklist of attractions. It’s an invitation to experience a region through its people, landscapes, kitchens and everyday pleasures.

Whether you’re planning a Calabria road trip, returning to a place you love or discovering Southern Italy from home, this book offers something worth taking your time over.

This Kindle edition has been created in Print Replica format to preserve the book’s original page design, full-colour photography and illustrated travel experience.

Unlike conventional Kindle ebooks, the photographs, text and page layouts remain together as they were designed. You can enjoy the book on supported Kindle reading apps, with the best visual experience on a colour tablet or larger screen.

Please note: Because this edition preserves the original pages, text size cannot be adjusted or reflowed. Print Replica editions are not compatible with dedicated Kindle e-readers.

The goal isn’t to cover more ground.
It’s to make the ground you cover matter.

About the author

Aaron Peterson writes the way he lives: with dirt on his hands, miles on his boots and curiosity still doing most of the steering.

After retirement, he returned seriously to something he had been doing since childhood. He had written for years, won amateur writing contests and then, like a lot of people, packed that ambition away while adulthood got busy. Eventually he took it back out.

His nonfiction grows from lived experience and an unreasonable desire to understand how things actually work. Gardening, herbalism, food, travel, buying cars or whatever rabbit hole happens to be open, Aaron tends to keep digging long after a sensible person would have stopped.
